On Friday the 8th June, the Governor General of Australia General Sir Peter Cosgrove ACK MC (Retd)Paid a visit to Box Hill RSL to unveil the “Official Portrait” of Cpl Cameron Baird VC MG. Among the invited guests there were highly ranked personnel of the Australian Army Major General Adam Findlay AM PhD Chief of all Operations for the Australian Commandos and SAS, his staff including WO1 Paul Dunbavin, Politicians, other dignitaries and members of the RSL.
The portrait was commissioned by Box Hill RSL Committee for Lewis Miller, previous Archibald winner and AWM portrait painter to paint. It is the only “Official Portrait” of Cameron who is Australia’s 100th VC (Victoria Cross) recipient, and who was trajectly killed in Afghanistan at the age of just 32 years old. His parents Doug and Kaye also attended this important event. This event with all present on this Friday marks an era in Box Hill RSL, s illustrious years. It also claims fact that we have had so many High profile people in the one place at the one time.
The portrait is currently on display in the main memorabilia Cabinet, and will then hang proudly in the RSL.
